The Lord Lives!
The Psalms portion of today’s One-Year reading was the continuation and conclusion of Psalm 18, recorded as the song David sang to the Lord after he was delivered from Saul and from every enemy who opposed him and God’s will for him. I pictured a modern application after reading through this section of the Psalms. Obviously, the original meaning of this song was an expression of praise and devotion from David, recognizing God’s hand in his life, even preserving him from those who wished for and even attempted to orchestrate his downfall. However, the praise that comes out of people when God preserves their innocence and status for His good purposes, which is the essence of Psalm 18, can be shared by anyone with godly understanding of reality.
I have a hopeful thought that I believe paints a better picture than the obnoxious slew of reporters and legislators jumping for the spotlight, in a pursuit that mocks justice and reality. I am of the mind that President Trump is innocent of the charges stirred up against him. I am even more confident that God chose him specifically to lead our country out of a period where immorality and fear of lack have dominated much of the scene. I don’t necessarily believe that America is “superior”, but I do believe that God has special designs for our country to bless the world around us, and that He will see those plans through — with or without the partnership of our leadership. Whether they like it or not, tremendous change is coming.
Back to the Psalm. This is the highlight from the passage:
The Lord lives!
Blessed be my Rock!
Let the God of my salvation be exalted.
It is God who avenges me,
And subdues the peoples under me;
He delivers me from my enemies.
You also lift me up above those who rise against me;
You have delivered me from the violent man. (Psalm 18:46–48)
I had the image that this song, this attitude of praise and thanksgiving to God for His justice and His vengeance, could be the anthem of the President through the rest of 2020 until 2024. That it was the living God, the Rock who avenged his innocence against the slander poised against him. That it was the Lord who subdued those who ought to serve with joy and obedience, and the Lord who put him high above those who oppose the good he intended (and intended) to do as the President. I liked that a whole lot.
I would very much like the same song to be in the mouths of repentant and wholly changed leaders.
If not — there is a living Lord. A God who avenges, delivers and subdues. There’ll be someone singing at the end of all this, and it won’t be who they think.
