My Foundation

This morning, during worship at Heritage, I had a realization while singing. The final song, “Build My Life” is one of my favorites to hear and sing. There’s a reason for that, and it is unique for me. A few years ago, my Mom was auto-playing through some live Bethel music videos on YouTube. The Bethel team was singing this song, but it was not the adults that were normally there.

In that video, there was a young man (who looked around my age) leading that song — powerfully, confidently, as if every word defined his entire life up to that moment.

I had forgotten about that video and my thoughts on it until Aaron Brown began to sing that song. And then I realized the “big picture” that the Lord was meaning to show me. That song wasn’t written “for me” or anything like that, but its meaning was “for me”, a life-song that I feel urged to carry and remember.

The song has a declaration of faith and complete devotion, the kind I hope for and long for. It is something I believe I can always ask for, always pray for, always receive over and over and over. The line in question is the chorus:

Holy, there is no one like You
There is none beside You
Open up my eyes in wonder
And show me who You are
And fill me with Your heart
And lead me in Your love to those around me

I want that to be my prayer, all my life, as long as the Holy Spirit keeps in my heart.

But as much as that is wonderful and worthwhile, this is why I love this song…

I will build my life upon Your love
It is a firm foundation
And I will put my trust in You alone
And I will not be shaken

I hope that this story can encourage you to find your song.
