In the Quiet
For the first time in a few weeks (it’s been cold!) I went outside to go up to the View and back, like I normally do. It had been a quiet and peaceful day, and it was the same outside. It was a little chilly, but the sun was up and out and it was warm enough. I paused up at the top for longer than I normally do, just looking at the clouds and the blue sky. It got colder, but I didn’t really care. It took me a little while of thinking, but the reason I stayed up there is because of how quiet it was.
It wasn’t windy, and there weren’t a lot of cars on the street below, and there were only a few other people up at the View. There were no distractions, no alarming or frustrating headlines detailing anything to do with elections or corruption or unanswered questions. There were no Twitter feeds to scroll through in mild irritation — it was just quiet. I realize now that in that quiet, that is where it is easiest to remember who God is.
He’s not alarmed or moved by any wind of politics or human corruption. He is above the worries and concerns of humanity because He can (and has — and will!) take care of them. He’s still God. I forget to take quiet moments, but I am planning to go out of my way to find them. I’m not worried about the future, but I am going to try my best to pursue quiet. It will take some habit-forming, but it will be worth it.
The world is spinning on and God is always God, and He is always good. The quiet places of the world are the best example of what it is like right now in the throne room of God. There’s only room up there for endless praise and perfect peace. There are things worth fighting for, now. There is debate and litigation and all of that. But once they become too noisy in our hearts and minds, it’s better to find quiet.
Make room for the quiet places. It makes way for peace. Peace wins over grief and anger and corruption and ignorance. More importantly, it makes room in our busy hearts and minds for the voice of the Holy Spirit to instruct, inspire, and lead us.
Don’t miss out on what quiet does.
